Glass Melting Electrodes made of Molybdenum

Electrodes made of molybdenum are used predominantly today for the melting of glass by means of electrical energy and similarly for electrically powered boosting systems. PLANSEE molybdenum electrodes have many advantageous properties: high purity, good form stability and high corrosion resistance to molten glass as well as a good electrical and thermal conductivity.

The purity of the material also rules out any discolouration of the glass melt or the formation of bubbles. The patented oxidation protection coating SIBOR for molybdenum glass melting electrodes simplifies the installation especially for bottom and plate electrodes. MoZrO2 - even stronger against corrosion

For the manufacture of extremly aggressive glass PLANSEE offers glass-melting electrode made of MoZrO2.

Doping molybdenum with small amounts of ZrO2 improves its properties considerably. It offers higher corrosion resistance against molten glass, and increases high-temperature strength.
One important area of application for the new MoZrO2 glass melting electrodes is the glass production for the solar industry. To achieve the desired properties, the glass is refined in the melting tank using antimony oxide. The MoZrO2 glass-melting electrode is the perfect material to perform in this aggressive environment. Antimony oxide can cause molybdenum electrodes to break rapidly due to attack in the grain boundaries of the molybdenum. MoZrO2 can withstand these attacks much longer, preventing or significantly delaying breakage and electrode loss.In the SO4 refined glasses used in the container industry, the doped MoZrO2 glass-melting electrode shows much better corrosion resistance in white, brown and green glass. Laboratory tests showed that it can decrease corrosion rate on molybdenum glass melting electrodes up to 40%.

Product Description.
Glass melting electrodes are delivered with a smooth forged and chemically cleaned surface. If requested, electrodes with a mechanically machined or coated surface are also available.
